I decided, in a cold, gray afternoon that I could no longer stand my life. No, I didn’t make a decision, every pore in me screamed ‘Help me!’  I didn’t recall a day when I would be left in peace.  Sometimes there was food and sometimes there was none.  Sometimes I’d be eating and came a boot to my head, knocking me over. Sometimes a heavy kick would wake me from sleep. And then I heard laughter.

I had to help me.

I knew that green door. I had peeped through the wide crack; beyond that, a different world.  I had to go to that different world.

And I did.

I looked back, one quick glance. I didn’t know what lay ahead but behind me, was darkness I knew too well.
